WHMIS Training Saskatchewan

WHMIS training in Saskatchewan follows the national WHMIS 2015 standard within the framework of provincial regulations under The Saskatchewan Employment Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. WorkSafe Saskatchewan, a joint initiative between the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, offers a free general WHMIS e-learning course developed in partnership with CCOHS. This course introduces workers to hazard classifications, GHS-style labels and pictograms, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and the responsibilities of suppliers, employers, and workers. However, completion of this general course does not exempt employers from the responsibility to deliver additional site-specific training tailored to the actual hazardous products and work procedures encountered by employees.

Beyond general awareness, Saskatchewan employers must develop a comprehensive WHMIS program that includes proper labelling, accessible SDSs, and emergency response instructions. They are required to review and update this program at least annually—or sooner if new hazards are introduced or work conditions change. Even though WHMIS certification cards are not provincially mandated, many employers require proof of training, and certificates are commonly issued upon completion of generic courses . In addition to the free introductory course, Saskatchewan also offers more advanced training options, such as comprehensive in-class or webinar modules through the Saskatchewan Safety Council and Construction Safety Association, along with “train-the-trainer” sessions designed for organizations seeking to internalize WHMIS instruction.
